What we do...

​

The Opera Society is a not-for-profit incorporated society, committed to supporting Opera Australia in Victoria and providing scholarships for young singers through the Melba Opera Trust. Opera Australia is dedicated to enriching Australia’s cultural life with exceptional operas that excite audiences, and sustaining and developing this wonderful art form.

 

The Society provides funds for two Melba Trust Scholarships each year: the Eleanor Blakemore Opera Society Scholarship and the Max & Jill Schultz Opera Society Scholarship. Recipients in 2025 are returning artists, Syrah Torii, Eleanor Blakemore Opera Society Scholarship and 

Aidan Hodder, Max & Jill Schultz Opera Society Scholarship.

We also sponsor the Opera Society Alumni Grant Recipient. The inaugural recipient of the Alumni Grant is Alex Flood. Alex was an artist in the Melba program in 2014 and she is now lives in Vienna, performing with the Vienna Volksoper. Alex applied for a grant to fund her Women’s Leadership Course at Oxford University, England.

And finally two Opera Australia artists are also supported by the Society: in 2025 they are Michael Lampard and Esther Song.

Musical entertainment at the quarterly lunches offered to members by the Society is provided by one or two of our sponsored artists.
